Facility Improvements

Investing for the Future
The Riverside Club was incorporated over 30 years ago by visionary Riverside families to ensure our families had a safe and thriving swim and tennis facility that would be the social hub of the neighborhood. The Club is getting a lot of use, which is great. But on the flip side, the facilities are aging at a proportionate rate. The Board, with input from many of you, has considered a number of enhancements consistent with our Budget Philosophy and bylaws. We'd like to share the key initiatives you can expect to see over the next 12 - 24 months.

We always keep in mind that ours is a neighborhood swim and tennis with no full time staff. Our goal is to create a space the membership enjoys, is easy to maintain, and ensure the club represents an outstanding value for your family.

Grounds
Fall 2009: Overhaul bathroom interiors. Traffic was way up this pool season and the restrooms show the wear. Remodeling them will ensure we can clean and disinfect quickly, and will make the facilities more durable and resistant to normal wear/tear and renegade children.

Winter/Spring 2010: Add sidewalk along West side of Riverside Drive from Edgewater Drive to the Club entrance. This will allow easy and safe pedestrian access to the club from the Riverside red light and help ease dangerous parking on Riverside Drive.

Winter/Spring 2010: Phase One renovation to the Pavilion area. We are working with Scapes Design and Construction to create a space that meets our needs for larger social area and ability to host large club functions and private events.

The central elements of Phase 1 include:

1. Aesthetic enhancements to the design and lighting of the pavilion area to feel more like an indoor/outdoor lodge.

2. A new outdoor fireplace featuring two built-in gas grills adjacent to the pavilion.

3. A large campground-style fire pit and patio located adjacent/behind the pavilion in the space presently occupied by the playground allowing for four-season enjoyment of the club.

Tennis
Our tennis program is thriving under Noel Wadawu's leadership as our tennis director. His academy has 5 certified teaching pros along with 1 strength and conditioning coach. Nearly 100 member families take lessons, and obviously many more play without instruction. We have mens, ladies, and mixed doubles ALTA teams with a variety of skill levels. If you are interested, there is a team for you!

Our annual operating budget includes funds sufficient to resurface two of our six courts every two years on a regular cycle. In 2009 we are pleased to announce a significant enhancement to our tennis program with the addition of two Har-Tru HydroCourts. These new clay courts will replace courts #1 and #2 (nearest the ball field).

Construction is scheduled to begin October 26. Noel and his staff will manage all periodic maintenance of the courts. The courts will further differentiate The Riverside Club from other Sandy Springs swim/tennis facilities and enhance Riverside resident home values.

Pool
The pool is the most popular amenity at the club and should be treated as such. Therefore, we have committed roughly a third of our annual budget to operate and maintain the pool. Before the pool opened for 2009 we completed all required safety repairs, but will take additional steps to ensure that the pool is as safe and enjoyable as possible. Most of the money being spent this offseason is safety related. However, we recognize that with heavy traffic the pool takes on some wear and tear, and we are addressing a full list of recommendations to keep the pool looking great.

Mechanical updates and repairs. The drains, pumps, valves, and other mechanical features are updated to comply with the toughest, latest government regulations called VGB. Many additional mechanical upgrades will be completed this offseason.

Finally, the main pool will be resurfaced during the 2010 offseason.
